Learn about the calculation of air renewal in environments according to your type of work

calculation of air renewal in environments blog

O calculation of air renewal in industrial environmentsserves to identify the air exchange rate per hour that should occur depending on the characteristics of each location. From air conditioning toindustrial air conditionerto the use of natural ventilation resources, it is essential that companies are aware of these values and follow the regulations.

These standards exist to ensure theindoor air quality,well-being, thermal comfort, respiratory health and health conditionsfor people to work in industrial warehouses. Professionals who feel good in their work environment — that is, without symptoms such as headache, dry throat and even difficulty breathing and with a good ability to concentrate, tend to be more productive, which directly contributes to the company's results.

Get a goodair circulation in industrial environmentsIt only brings benefits to the industry, so it is essential to think about this for your new warehouse projects. Check out this post for more information about calculating air renewal in indoor industrial environments.

How the air renewal rate works in industry

When talking about the calculation of air renewal in industrial indoor environments, the reference is to thetotal exchange of the volume of air present in a room in a given time. The rate is measured inexchanges per hour, as can be seen in the following table, and establishes that, through ventilation resources, that warehouse must exchange all internal air for X times every hour.

To carry out this calculation you need to have theshed dimensions(obtaining its total volume) and theopenings for air inlet and outlet, enabling understanding of the flow rate (volume of air leaving the warehouse per second). From this it is possible to determine how long it will take for all the air to leave the warehouse and be replaced by a new volume, and how many times per hour it is recommended for that environment for this to happen.

This is themain parameterwhich must be analyzed when implementing ventilation resources in industrial warehouses, so check below how you can size and put this understanding into practice.

What to consider when calculating air renewal in industrial environments

According to a table by Greenheck (2002) and even according to the different regulations on the subject, it is possible to identify that each different type of work or warehouse hasair exchange ratesspecific.

However, the calculation of air renewal in environments involves a series of factors to arrive at these somewhat standardized numbers. Each location will have a different appropriate air exchange rate per hour taking into account the following variable aspects:

  • dimensions of the shed (total internal area);
  • type, number and location of openings for air inlet and outlet;
  • air circulation speed;
  • positioning of the building in relation to the Sun;
  • incidence of wind at the construction site;
  • thermal variation;
  • local weather conditions;
  • relative air humidity;
  • thermal or contaminant load that needs to be combatted with air renewal.

These are some examples of aspects that need to be studied on site with precise measurements so that we can understand the needs of each environment.  Another way to carry out these analyzes is virtually through theCFD (Computational Fluid Dynamic), or, Computational Fluid Dynamics, allowing tests to be carried out to obtainnatural ventilation efficiency.

Furthermore,the type of warehouse and products or equipment storedinternally it also influences the calculation of air renewal in industrial indoor environments. When analyzing each of these aspects at the construction site, it is necessary to take into account all theelements that can add heat to the environment, or even block air passages, to understand the scenario and offer the best solution for your new project.
